Fort Myers Accident Attorney: Are You Prepared to Prevent Burn Injuries This Spring?

Cape Coral accident attorneyEven though we enjoy balmy weather here in Fort Myers year round, the warmer weather still encourages us to spend more time outside in the spring and summer months. Before you head outside with your family, we urge you to brush up on your outdoor fire safety skills.

While grills and fire pits are often considered essential elements for a backyard party, they can both lead to serious Fort Myers accidents if proper safety precautions are not taken. Therefore, we urge you to consider the following tips.

Grill Safety

  • Regularly remove the burner and clean the inlet to the burner before using your grill.
  • Check grill for rust or structural
damage. On a gas grill, check
the hose that connects the gas cylinder to the grill for cracks or breaks. Have repairs made if necessary.
  • Check the gas cylinder mount for corrosion. It’s important that the gas tank always be upright, not hanging or sideways.
  • When in doubt, replace any worn or damaged grill parts.
  • For charcoal grills, use only charcoal lighter fluid.
  • Never add any lighter fluid or any other flammable liquids after igniting.
  • Place your grill away from high traffic areas, especially if there are children or pets around.

Fire Pit Safety

  • Never leave an outdoor fire pit unattended.
  • Always follow manufacturers instructions regarding types of fuel to be used in the fire pit.
  • Always be prepared to extinguish the fire, whether it is with water or sand bucket, or a fire extinguisher.
  • Always use the mesh screen provided with most fire pits.
  • Put the fire out, completely, before leaving it for the night.
  • Use safety gloves.
