Naples Injury Attorney Stresses Importance of Motorcycle Helmets

by Carmen Dellutri on May 28, 2012

Fort Myers accident lawyerAs we mentioned last week, May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. In addition to increased awareness by motorcyclists and drivers, wearing the proper safety gear is also extremely important to preventing a tragic accident.

As Naples injury attorneys, we know firsthand that a helmet can be the difference between life and death in a serious motorcycle accident. Last month, a 24-year-old Naples man on a motorcycle was hit by a pickup and dragged under the vehicle. His helmet and other gear are credited with his survival.

Others are not so lucky. In Florida, 426 motorcyclists were killed last year, according to preliminary data from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Thirteen of the fatal crashes were in Collier and Lee counties.

Unfortunately, Florida motorcyclists are not required to wear a helmet if they are older than 20 and carry at least $10,000 in medical insurance coverage. However, it is always a good idea.

If you don’t wear a helmet every time you ride, please consider the following:

  • Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes.
  • An unhelmeted motorcyclist is 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury and 15 percent more likely to suffer a nonfatal injury than a helmeted motorcyclist when involved in a crash.
  • NHTSA estimates that motorcycle helmets reduce the likelihood of a crash fatality by 37 percent.
  • The Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) study found that motorcycle helmets are 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries and that unhelmeted motorcyclists involved in crashes were three times more likely to suffer brain injuries than those wearing helmets.

The Dellutri Law Group is focused on making bad situations better and putting lives back together. If you or someone you love has been seriously injured in a Naples accident caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation.
