Cape Coral Accident Attorney Offers Summer Bike Safety Tips for Kids

by Carmen Dellutri on June 14, 2012

Naples bike accident lawyerOnce kids are out of school for the summer, many will spend a lot more time on their bikes. Unfortunately, that also means they are at greater risk for a Cape Coral bicycle accident.

Every year, over 300,000 kids are treated in the emergency department for bike injuries, and at least 10,000 children suffer serious injuries that require a few days in the hospital. When bicycle accidents lead to head injuries, they can even be fatal.

Given these alarming statistics, parents should make sure that their children always wear a bicycle helmet. In addition, kids should understand how to avoid a bicycle accident.

Below are several important road rules to share with your children:

  • Always ride with your hands on the handlebars.
  • Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway, an alley, or a curb.
  • Cross at intersections. When you pull out between parked cars, drivers can't see you coming.
  • Walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals.
  • Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do. Never ride against traffic.
  • Use bike lanes or designated bike routes wherever you can.
  • Don't ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.
  • Stop at all stop signs and obey traffic (red) lights just as cars do.
  • Ride single-file on the street with friends.
  • When passing other bikers or people on the street, always pass to their left side, and call out "On your left!" so they know that you are coming.
