How Does Florida Rank in Injury Prevention?

by Carmen Dellutri on July 11, 2012

Cape Coral accident attorneyFlorida had the 18th highest rate of injury deaths in the country, according to a new report. The report, The Facts Hurt: A State-By-State Injury Prevention Policy Report, also revealed that the state could be doing more to reduce the number of injuries.

As Cape Coral injury attorneys, we hope that the report will lead to additional injury prevention policies here in Florida.

The Facts Hurt report was compiled by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF. It argues that millions of injuries could be prevented each year if more states adopted additional research-based injury prevention policies, and if programs were fully implemented and enforced.

"While tremendous progress has been made in preventing and treating injury, it remains a leading cause of death for people of all ages and the number one cause of death for children," said Dr. Andrea Gielen, past president of SAVIR and director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. "Texting while driving, the increasing numbers of falls in older adults, domestic violence and the astonishing rise in misuse of prescription drugs mean we need to redouble our efforts to make safety research and policy a national priority."

Florida scored six out of 10 on key indicators of steps states can take to prevent injuries. That puts Florida in the middle of the pack nationally, with 24 states scoring a five or lower. California and New York received the highest score of nine out of a possible 10, while Montana and Ohio only received a two out of 10.

Florida lost points on the following four indicators:

  • Booster Seats: Meet American Academy of Pediatricians standards -- require booster seats to at least the age of eight.
  • Motorcycle Helmets: Universal helmet law requiring helmets for all riders.
  • Drunk Driving: Mandatory ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers, even first offenders.
  • Teen Dating Violence: Receive an "A" in the Break the Cycle Report, which analyzed teen dating violence laws across the country.
