Where Do Most Florida Boating Accidents Take Place?

The Florida Fish and Wildlife’s Commission’s annual boating accident statistics revealed that 59% of the reportable boating accidents during the 2011 calendar year occurred in 10 Florida counties. In addition to Lee and Collier County, Pinellas County, Hillsborough County, Monroe County, Brevard County, Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Martin County made the top 10.

Lee County ranked 5th in the state with 38 reportable accidents, 18 injuries and one death. Collier was 7th with 34 accidents, 2 deaths and 24 injuries. Monroe County, home to the Florida Keys, had the highest number of boating accidents as well as boating injuries in Florida.

“The frequency of boating accidents in Florida and their causes would probably shock most people,” said Investigator Andy Bickel, of the FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement. “We want to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and deaths on Florida waters,” Bickel said.

The report confirms that boaters who have taken a basic boating safety class are less likely to be involved in a serious Florida boating accident. For additional safety tips, please check out our prior posts on Florida boating accidents.
