Florida boat accident attorneyAs the warmer weather approaches, more Florida residents will be taking to the state’s waterways. Florida’s abundant bays, rivers, and lakes make it a great place for boating. In fact, there are nearly a million registered boats across the state. Unfortunately, this also means that there is an increased risk for boating-related accidents.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the state agency tasked with keeping our waterways safe, Florida has the highest number of boating fatalities in the country.

In addition, consider the following alarming statistics:

  • In 2009, there were 620 reportable Florida boating accidents and 65 Florida boating related fatalities.
  • The majority of the deaths were due to victims falling overboard or capsizing their boat and drowning.
  • Personal watercrafts accounted for 23% (143) of the reported Florida boating accidents.
  • 72% of operators involved in boating accidents had no formal instruction in the operation of a boat.

Boating safety education is one of the most effective ways to prevent tragic Florida boating accidents. Below are a few tips to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable boating experience this summer:

  • Never use drugs or alcohol before or during boat operation.
  • Use and maintain the right safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, boats lights, and emergency supplies.
  • Watch the weather and take appropriate steps to avoid boating in inclement weather.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
  • Do not overload your boat.
  • Follow the rules of the waterway.
