Could Your Laundry Detergent Be Putting Your Children at Risk?

Fort Myers injury law firmAs Fort Myers injury attorneys, we are growing concerned by reports that a new type of laundry detergent could be putting children at risk. The products in question—single load pods— are fairly new to the market, but are commonly found on stores shelves.

While pods may be convenient, they can pose risks to small children who mistake them for candy. Investigators with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently analyzed the over 1,000 laundry detergent-based poisonings reported from May 17 to June 17, 2012. Nearly half involved “pods.”

The CDC also found that 94 percent of laundry pod exposures involved children 5 years of age and younger. Among those children, laundry pod detergent exposure was more often associated with gastrointestinal and respiratory adverse health effects, and mental status changes compared to non-pod laundry detergent exposure.

Given the potential dangers, parents and caregivers are reminded to keep laundry detergent pods, and other household cleaning products, out of reach and out of sight of children.
