Do You Know How to Drive Safely on Foggy Cape Coral Roadways?

by Carmen Dellutri on November 8, 2012

Cape Coral accident attorneyFog is common on Cape Coral roadways, particularly as the weather begins to get cooler. Although it is important for drivers to exercise care in all circumstances, foggy roadways often require extra precautions. At its worse, fog can reduce visibility to 1/4 mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions.

If you cannot wait until fog clears or encounter foggy conditions unexpectedly, as Cape Coral accident attorneys, we encourage you to keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Use low beam headlights. High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more. Your lights help other drivers see your vehicle, so be sure they all work. Keep your windshield and headlights clean in order to reduce the glare and increase visibility.
  • Reduce your speed. You should always slow down before you enter a patch of fog. Be sure that you can stop within the distance that you can see. Fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion when you may actually be speeding. Speed is a major factor in fog-related crashes.
  • Stay alert. Be on the look out for slow-moving and parked vehicles. Listen for traffic you cannot see. Turn off the radio and open your window a little so you can hear better.
  • Use wipers and defrosters to increase visibility. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if poor visibility is due to fog or moisture on the windshield. Therefore, you should use your wipers and defrosters liberally.
  • Drive cautiously. Use the right side of the road or painted road markings as a guide. Avoid passing and/or changing lanes. Signal turns well in advance and brake early as you approach a stop.
