Who Is at Greatest Risk for a Fort Myers Drowsy Driving Accident?

by Carmen Dellutri on December 10, 2012

Fort Myers car accident lawyerContrary to what many might think, younger drivers, ages 16 to 24, are more likely to drive while drowsy, according to a recent AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety survey. In fact, one in seven licensed drivers in that age group report falling asleep at the wheel least once in the past year.

The latest report confirms the results of a previous examination of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash data. It found that young drivers age 16-24 were more likely, by some 78 percent, to be drowsy at the time of the crash as drivers age 40-59.

“Less-experienced drivers tend to underestimate the risks of drowsy driving and overestimate their ability to deal with problems from the practice,” says Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of AAA Foundation.

As Fort Myers accident attorneys, we urge college students to keep the findings in mind as they travel back and forth from school during the holidays. The risk for drowsy driving is high particularly after cramming for exams. Symptoms that you may be too tired to drive include having trouble keeping your eyes opened and focused, missing exits and traffic signs, daydreaming, and drifting from the road.

To remain alert and avoid drowsiness, AAA suggests:

  • Getting plenty of sleep (at least six hours) the night before a long trip;
  • Scheduling a break every two hours or every 100 miles;
  • Traveling at times when you are normally awake, and staying overnight rather than driving straight through; and
  • Stop driving if you become sleepy; someone who is tired could fall asleep at any time.
