Can Stability Control Systems Help Prevent a Naples Car Accident?

by Carmen Dellutri on January 4, 2013

Florida car accident lawyerAs Naples car accident attorneys, we know that drivers do not all always drive as carefully as they should. Speed and inattention can often cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles and cause a deadly accident.

Thankfully, a new report shows that electronic stability control (ESC) systems now found in vehicles can help prevent fatal crashes. ESC systems use automatic computer controlled braking of individual wheels to help the driver maintain control in risky driving situations in which the vehicle is beginning to lose directional stability at the rear wheels (spin out) or directional control at the front wheels (plow out).

The technology, which must now come standard in all new passenger vehicles, is credited with saving an estimated 863 lives in 2010. The National Highway Transportation Administration estimates a total of 2,202 lives were saved from 2008 to 2010.

“These numbers send a clear message about this technology's life-saving potential," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement released by NHTSA. "As more vehicles on the road are equipped with ESC in the coming years, we know the technology will save even more lives."

The NHTA is now looking to also require electronic stability systems in larger vehicles. Last year, the agency proposed a new federal motor vehicle safety standard to ESC systems on large commercial trucks and large buses for the first time ever. Applying ESC technology to the heavy-duty fleet could prevent up to 56 percent of rollover crashes each year and another 14 percent of loss-of-control crashes in these vehicles, according to the NHTSA.
