Port Charlotte Accident Attorneys: Can Wrong-Way Crashes Be Prevented?

by Carmen Dellutri on January 18, 2013

Naples car accident lawyerWrong-way accidents are some of the most dangerous on the road, resulting in over 350 deaths every year. Because they are so often fatal, the National Transportation Safety Board recently conducted a study into how these accidents can best be prevented.

The study revealed that wrong-way collisions occur most often at night and during the weekends. It is therefore not surprising that driving while impaired by alcohol is the primary cause of wrong-way driving collisions. In fact, drivers under the influence of alcohol cause over 60 percent of wrong-way collisions, according to the NTSB. In addition, nine percent of wrong-way drivers had been convicted of driving while intoxicated within the three years prior to the wrong-way collision.

Given the role of alcohol, the NTSB recommends new countermeasures to deter impaired driving. It argues that the installation of alcohol ignition interlocks on the vehicles of all driving while intoxicated (DWI) offenders would reduce accidents caused by alcohol-impaired drivers. These systems require the driver to provide a breath sample before the vehicle will start.

To further prevent wrong-way collisions, the NTSB also suggested additional measures, including better lighting, enhanced signage and roadway markings, and GPS devices that could provide a warning to alert drivers of wrong-way movements. Also, because older drivers account for about 15 percent of wrong-way collision, the NTSB asked all states to implement a comprehensive older driver safety program like the one developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
