Fort Myers Crash Calls For Reminder About School Bus Safety

by Carmen Dellutri on February 28, 2013

Fort Myers child injury attorneyA recent school bus accident in Fort Myers serves as an important reminder about school bus safety. The driver of another vehicle apparently was picking up paperwork from the floor of his car and didn't see the bus stop in front of him at a railroad crossing.

Florida Highway Patrol cited the driver for reckless driving. Although the bus driver suffered minor injuries, none of the children on the bus were hurt.

As Fort Myers injury lawyers, we urge drivers to use caution and patience when driving around school buses. Below are a few specific tips:

  • When approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and its stop arms extended, motorists are required to STOP in nearly every instance.
  • Be alert and watch for children at all times, but especially near schools, bus stops, school buses, and in school parking lots.
  • Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, paying extra attention to the lower speed limits in school zones.
  • Be prepared for buses to stop at railroad crossings.
  • Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at crosswalks.
  • Do not change lanes or make U-turns in school zones.
  • Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.
  • Do not text or use a cell phone while driving.
