Florida Launches Designated Texter Campaign

by Carmen Dellutri on March 6, 2013

Sarasota personal injury attorneyAs lawmakers continue to debate a texting ban, the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority is testing a new approach—designated texters.

Similar to a designated driver, a “designated texter” is tasked with responding to a driver’s incoming texts while they’re driving. The message behind the campaign is that no text is worth the risk.

As Port Charlotte accident attorneys, we think the approach makes sense and hope that it spreads throughout Florida. Statistics show that drivers who send and receive text messages are 23 times more likely to cause a car accident. Because many drivers are too impatient to wait until they reach their destination, designating a texter could save lives.

The “Designated Texter” campaign launched in February and runs until June, with an intense focus in April during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Drivers will see the “Designated Texter” logo on many of the Expressway Authority’s toll booths in March and there are plans to invite the public to submit and vote on the best “Designated Texter” video, with the winning video airing as commercials. Additional information about the campaign can be found here.
