Fort Myers Accident Attorneys: Spring Training DUI Problems Continue

by Carmen Dellutri on March 20, 2013

Fort Myers accident attorneySpring training, a right of passage for every baseball season, is currently underway in Ft. Myers and several other neighboring cities. Unfortunately, driving under the influence (DUI) seems to be as well.

In the most recent incident, Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Drake Britton was arrested for DUI and reckless driving. He was allegedly traveling more than 110 miles per hour and swerving in between vehicles as he tried to elude police. He eventually left the roadway and crashed into a barbed-wire fence.

As Fort Myers accident attorneys, we are concerned about the safety of our roadways during spring training. Last year, two MLB players were arrested for driving under the influence after being involved in car accidents. Tampa Bay Rays minor league pitcher Matthew Brian Bush was arrested after he struck a motorcyclist and left the scene. Boston Red Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks was also arrested and charged with driving under the influence and hit and run.

Moreover, these are only the most recent DUI accidents involving professional baseball players. In March 2006, Minnesota Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano was arrested on a DUI charge in Cape Coral and found guilty. Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested in February 2011 in Fort Pierce on a DUI charge.

While Major League Baseball has taken steps to address alcohol abuse by its players, it appears that more should be done, particularly during spring training, to ensure that players are not putting themselves and others on the road at risk.
