New Study Suggests Fort Myers Drivers Should Get Their Heads Out of the Clouds

Researchers from the Erie Insurance Group found that drivers are five times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash because they are “lost in thought” than using some electronic device.

As NBC News reports, the study examined fatal accidents over the last two years that were caused by some form of distracted driving. Alarmingly, 62 percent of the crashes were attributed to simply being “lost in thought.” This might include colliding with the back of another vehicle, running a red light, or some other driver error.

In contrast, only 12 percent of the fatal distracted accidents examined by the researchers were blamed on some form of mobile phone use. Other cited distractions included rubbernecking, kids, eating and drinking, and reaching for something in the vehicle.

"We looked at what law enforcement officers across the country reported when they filled out reports on fatal crashes and the results were disturbing. We hope the data will encourage people to avoid these high-risk behaviors that needlessly increase their risk of being involved in a fatal crash,” said Erie Senior Vice President Doug Smith.

As this study shows, distracted driving can be caused by anything that takes the driver’s attention for the road. For those seriously injured in these types of accidents, careless driving can form the basis of a successful personal injury lawsuit.
