Teen Driver Safety During Prom and Graduation Season

Cape Coral teen driving accident lawyerAs Cape Coral injury lawyers, we know that prom and graduation season is a time for celebrating. Unfortunately, it is also a dangerous time of year for teen drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 500 teenagers die in alcohol-related traffic accidents during prom and graduation season every year. As we have previously highlighted on this Florida Injury Blog, car accidents are the leading cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds throughout the year.

While impaired driving is a top concern, distractions caused by texting, loud music, and rowdy passengers can also lead to risky driving. Teens are also new drivers, and their inexperience can get them in trouble.

To help make sure that teens look back on prom and graduation with happy memories, we encourage parents and teens to consider the following:

  • Take a party bus/limo or carpooling with a sober friend/parent to the event. This ensures that someone who is willing to take the responsibility of the safety of passengers is aware and responsible for transportation.
  • Keep the number of a taxi or trusted sober friend for after the events
  • Encourage student councils to organize an after-prom activity where students are transported from Prom to the event. Many schools take advantage of their local family fun centers with laser tag, mini golf, go-karts and more.
  • Buckle up! This is simply the best way to stay safe in the event of a crash.
  • Pledge not to drink
