Who Is at Greatest Risk for a Naples Bicycle Accident?

by Carmen Dellutri on May 28, 2013

Florida bicycle injury lawyerAs Naples injury attorneys, we know that serious bicycle accidents occur all too often. In 2011, 677 bicyclists were killed and an additional 48,000 were injured in traffic crashes. There were 125 fatalities in Florida alone, making it one of the most dangerous states in the country.

As highlighted in a recent report by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the risk for a bicycle accident is not equal. Below are some common risk factors:

  • Gender: The majority of the bicyclists killed or injured in 2011 were males (85% and 78%, respectively).
  • Time of day: The majority of bicyclist fatalities, 201 (30%), occurred between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. The second highest number of fatalities, 142 (21%), occurred between the hours of 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. The fewest bicyclist fatalities occurred between the hours of midnight and 3:59 a.m.
  • Location: The majority of bicyclist fatalities in 2011 occurred in urban areas (69%) and at non-intersections (59%).
  • Alcohol involvement: In 31 percent of the crashes, either the driver or the bicyclist was reported to have a BAC of .08 g/dL or higher.

As a reminder, bicyclists should always wear properly fitted bicycle helmets. A helmet is the single most effective way to prevent head injury resulting from a bicycle crash.
