Cape Coral Attorneys Offer Summer Safety Tips

by Carmen Dellutri on May 29, 2013

Southwest Florida personal injury attorneySummer often means more time spent outside with our families. Unfortunately, some of our favorite activities, like swimming, grilling and even playing on the swings, can lead to serious injuries, particularly if the proper precautions aren’t taken.

To make sure all of our readers have a safe and enjoyable summer, we want to share the following statistics and tips from Consumer Reports:

Outdoor decks: Porches and decks cause an average of 45,000 injuries each year, as many structures in the United States are more than 20 years old. Before your next party, check railing, steps, and boards for signs of trouble.

Pool safety: Nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in pools every year, while thousands more are injured. Make sure you have protections in place to prevent a pool accident, including fences, self-latching gates, alarms, and drain covers.

Outdoor fires: Outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, and patio heaters caused approximately 2,900 injuries in 2011. Keep a fire extinguisher or hose nearby, and make sure embers are fully extinguished by either burying them in dirt or dousing them with water. Children should also be closely supervised.

Grilling: Outdoor cooking on grills, hibachis and barbecues results in hundreds of injuries every year, including serious burns. Safety tips include regularly inspecting the grill for leaks and breaks, and establishing a safety zone for young children.

Swing sets: About 51,000 injuries occur each year on home play equipment. Another 148,000 injuries occur on public playgrounds. To prevent falls and other serious injuries, it is important to make sure the equipment meets required safety standards and is installed properly.

We will talking about many of these high-risk activities in the coming weeks and encourage you to check back for additional tips and safety information.
