Cape Coral Injury Lawyers: Fatal Crash Highlights Dangers of Big Trucks

by Carmen Dellutri on June 21, 2013

Fort Myers personal injury attorneyA truck accident in New York recently claimed the lives of seven others on the road. The crash is blamed on equipment failure — a trailer carrying crushed cars broke free from the truck and careened across several lanes of traffic.

As explained by ABC-7, trailers are generally attached to tractors by a "fifth wheel," in which a pin on the trailer slides into the center of a large horseshoe-shaped piece of metal and is secured by an automatic locking device. In this case, the connection between the two parts failed, although the exact cause is still under investigation.

As this accident highlights, truck driver error is not the only cause of serious truck accidents. Mechanical failures can also be to blame.  While sometimes the part is defective, truck companies are also required to conduct routine maintenance and inspections to make sure trucks and their trailers are in working order.

As we previously highlighted on this Florida Injury Blog, trucking companies don’t always meet their obligations. In fact, one out of seven of 21,255 vehicles inspected during last year’s Brake Safety Week were placed out-of-service due to brake issues.

While the most recent truck accident may be a rare event, brakes have been cited in 29.4 percent of commercial motor vehicle crashes as an associated factor.
