Take a Deep Breath: Road Rage Accidents on the Rise

by Carmen Dellutri on July 17, 2013

Naples personal injury attorneyIn the hands of an angry driver, a motor vehicle can become a dangerous weapon. According to the latest statistics, road rage accidents are on the rise. In fact, the Department of Transportation reports that road rage is up 170 percent since 2007.

Unfortunately, many of these incidents are caused by trivial disagreements. Stated reasons for violent traffic disputes include arguments over parking spaces, cutting another motorist off or refusing to allow passing, minor traffic crashes, obscene gestures, loud music, overuse of the horn, slow driving, tailgating, failure to use a turn signal, and similar behaviors, according to a recent study by AAA Foundation.

To protect yourself from a Cape Coral road rage accident, it is important keep a level head. Below are several others tips for avoiding the wrath of an aggressive driver:

  • Use your horn sparingly
and avoid obscene gestures
  • Don't block the passing lane
or switch lanes without signaling
  • Avoid blocking the right-hand turn lane
  • Do not take more than one parking space or park in a disabled parking space without the proper credentials
  • Do not tailgate
  • If you travel slowly, pull over and allow traffic to pass
  • Avoid unnecessary use of high beam headlights
  • Don't stop in the road to talk with a pedestrian or other driver
  • Assume other drivers' mistakes are not personal
  • Be polite and courteous, even if the other driver isn't
  • If another driver challenges you, take a deep breath and get out of the way
