Cape Coral Injury Lawyers Support Pool Safety Week

by Carmen Dellutri on July 29, 2013

Florida drowning accident attorneyPool Safety Week 2013 runs from July 28 to August 3. As Cape Coral injury lawyers, we want to do our part in encouraging water safety.

The statistics underscore the risk. An average of 390 children ages 0-14 die in pool and spa drownings each year. An additional 5,200 kids are treated for injuries in emergency rooms across the country. In 2012, Florida led the country with 42 pool deaths, according to data compiled by USA Swimming.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Simple Steps Save Lives.” As highlighted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, “Adding as many proven water safety steps as possible is the best way to assure a safe and fun experience, because you can never know which one might save a child’s life—until it does.”

Below are some of the CPSC’s most important tips:

Stay Close, Be Alert and Watch

  • Always watch your children and never leave them unattended
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings
  • Have a phone close by at all times
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first

Learn and Practice Water Safety Skills

  • Learn to swim
  • Know how to perform CPR on children and adults
  • Understand the basics of life saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency

Have the Appropriate Equipment

  • Install a fence around the perimeter of the pool and spa of at least four feet in height
  • Use self-closing and self-latching gates
Ensure all pools and spas have compliant drain covers
  • Install a door alarm from the house to the pool area
  • Maintain pool and spa covers in working order
  • Have life-saving equipment such as life rings or reaching poles available for use

The Dellutri Law Group is focused on making bad situations better and putting lives back together. If you or someone you love has been seriously injured in a Cape Coral accident caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation.
