Is a Bike Helmet on Your Back to School List?

by Carmen Dellutri on August 26, 2013

Naples bike accident lawyerAs kids head back to the classroom, Cape Coral parents may want to include a new bike helmet on their shopping list. Helmets are the single best way to prevent a serious head injury while biking and must fit properly to do their job.

In 2009, Florida reported more bicycle deaths than any other state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In total, 7,282 children ages 5 to 14 were killed or required hospital treatment for injuries due to cycling crashes, according to the Florida Department of Health's Vital Statistics and Agency for Health Care Administration.

To protect children from injuries as they bike to school or simply around the neighborhood, parents should require children to wear a helmet every time they ride their bikes. Studies have shown that while many kids own helmets, very few wear them regularly. Universal use of bicycle helmets by children ages 4 to 15 could prevent between 135 and 155 deaths, between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries, and between 18,000 and 55,000 scalp and face injuries annually.

In addition to helmet safety, below are several other important road rules to share with your children:

  • Always ride with your hands on the handlebars.
  • Always stop and check for traffic in both directions when leaving your driveway, an alley, or a curb.
  • Cross at intersections. When you pull out between parked cars, drivers can't see you coming.
  • Walk your bike across busy intersections using the crosswalk and following traffic signals.
  • Ride on the right-hand side of the street, so you travel in the same direction as cars do. Never ride against traffic.
  • Use bike lanes or designated bike routes wherever you can.
  • Don't ride too close to parked cars. Doors can open suddenly.
  • Stop at all stop signs and obey traffic (red) lights just as cars do.
  • Ride single-file on the street with friends.
  • When passing other bikers or people on the street, always pass to their left side, and call out "On your left!" so they know that you are coming.
