by Carmen Dellutri on September 2, 2013

California DUI accident nightPreliminary findings suggest that traffic fatalities are down for the first six months of 2013. So if you have been heeding our advice to put down your cell phone while driving, wear your seatbelt and obey the speed limit, give yourself a pat on the back.

According to the National Safety Council, deaths from motor vehicle crashes during the first six months of 2013 are down 5 percent, compared to the same six-month period last year. In 2013, an estimated 16,620 traffic deaths occurred from January through June, compared to 17,430 in 2012.

“The Council will be keeping a close eye on our monthly traffic fatality estimates to determine if this decrease is just a blip on the radar,” said Janet Froetscher, President and CEO of the National Safety Council. “We are encouraged to see this downward trend and will remain vigilant to keep our roads as safe as possible.”

In Florida, traffic deaths declined seven percent, from 1,083 for the first six months of 2012 to 1,003 for the first six months of this year. While the exact reasons for the decrease have yet to be determined, we are hopeful that it continues for the rest of the year.
