Tragic Florida Accident Highlights Danger of Laundry “Pods”

by Carmen Dellutri on September 6, 2013

laundry pods injuryA Florida infant recently died after ingesting a liquid laundry packet. The tragic death highlights the risks associated with laundry “pods,” which are becoming increasingly popular among consumers.

The danger is that the brightly colored laundry packets may look like candy to a small child. According to the Florida Poison Information Center, the recent fatality may be the first in the U.S. since May 2012, when the received its initial report. So far this year, the center been notified of 300 cases of accidental exposure.

“With young children, any household product is likely to end up in their mouth,” said Dr. Cynthia Lewis-Younger, the center’s medical director. Thankfully, most incidents in Florida involved children tasting or licking the laundry pods, which don’t cause children to become seriously ill.

As we have previously discussed on this Florida Injury Blog, investigators with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently analyzed the over 1,000 laundry detergent-based poisonings reported from May 17 to June 17, 2012. Nearly half involved “pods.”

The CDC also found that 94 percent of laundry pod exposures involved children 5 years of age and younger. Among those children, laundry pod detergent exposure was more often associated with gastrointestinal and respiratory adverse health effects, and mental status changes compared to non-pod laundry detergent exposure.

Given the serious risks, we strongly encourage parents to think twice before using this new product or make sure they are securely stored away from small children.
