Illegal Drag Racing Suspected in Deadly Naples Car Accident

by Carmen Dellutri on September 25, 2013

Fort Myers personal injury attorneysA tragic crash that killed an 86-year-old grandmother and injured two others was likely caused by drag racing, according to witnesses. The accident highlights the dangers associated with illegal street racing.

Naples News reports that two vehicles were traveling westbound on Immokalee Road when one of the drivers lost control. The car crossed the center median and struck an approaching vehicle head on.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. In Orlando, 10 people were injured during a semi-organized drag-racing event this summer. One of the vehicles involved lost control and crashed into spectators, according to police.

While drag racing may look cool in movies like The Fast and the Furious, it is extremely dangerous. Traveling at high speeds on pubic roads puts other drivers, pedestrian and cyclists at risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there were 1,047 racing-related deaths in the United States from 2001 to 2008.

Illegal drag racing is almost always considered reckless driving. If you or a loved one has been injured while driving, walking or cycling near a street race, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses.
