Cape Coral Bus Accident Reminds Drivers to Use Caution Near Precious Cargo

by Carmen Dellutri on September 26, 2013

Fort Myers child injury attorneyWith the new school year barely in full swing, Cape Coral has already seen its first school bus accident. Thankfully, no one suffered serious injuries.

According to NBC 2, the crash occurred near the intersection of SW 38th street and Chiquita Boulevard. A sedan reared-ended an Oasis Elementary School bus and triggered another crash.

While school buses are considered one of the safest ways for children to travel to and from school, accidents do happen. A recent study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration found that 1,351 people have died in school transportation-related crashes since 2002, which is an average of 135 fatalities per year.

The recent Cape Coral accident should serve as a reminder to drivers about exercising caution when driving near school buses. They make frequent stops, so it is important to leave adequate room to brake quickly.

Below are a few other important tips to keep in mind:

  • When approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and its stop arms extended, motorists are required to STOP in nearly every instance.
  • Be alert and watch for children at all times, but especially near schools, bus stops, school buses, and in school parking lots.
  • Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, paying extra attention to the lower speed limits in school zones.
  • Be prepared for buses to stop at railroad crossings.
  • Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at crosswalks.
  • Do not change lanes or make U-turns in school zones.
  • Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.
  • Do not text or use a cell phone while driving.
