Indoor Trampoline Park Coming to Fort Myers, But Is It Safe?

by Carmen Dellutri on September 30, 2013

premises liabilityAn indoor trampoline park called Sky Zone will soon open in Fort Myers. While these facilitates are a great way for families to spend the day together while getting exercise, they can also result in serious injuries.

In 2010, there were 92,159 trampoline-related injuries requiring hospital treatment, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The majority of injuries result from colliding with others, landing improperly while performing stunts, or falling off or onto the springs or frames. Serious injuries can lead to paralysis or even death.

Given the rise in trampoline injuries, the American Academy of Pediatrics has warned: “It is not advised that children play on trampolines. The only time trampolines should be used is for training programs or certain sports, and then only under supervision of a trained adult.”

While trampoline parks may appear safer than a store-bought apparatus placed in your backyard, many of the same dangers exist. Studies show that 83 percent of trampoline injuries occur while more than one child is jumping at the same time, a common occurrence at trampoline parks.

Broken equipment, overcrowding and poor supervision can further compound the risks. Even more concerning, the facilities are not regulated by any state or federal agency. Rather, each trampoline park is responsible for its own safety procedures.

While trampoline parks generally require participants (or their parents) to sign liability waivers, plaintiffs have successfully pursued personal injury lawsuits following serious injuries. Many resulted in insurance settlements.
