Grant Will Allow Lee County to Improve Bicycle Safety

by Carmen Dellutri on October 11, 2013

Florida bicycle injury lawyerFlorida is the most dangerous state in the country to ride your bicycle. Our state led the country with 125 bicycle fatalities in 2011, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Given our poor track record, we are pleased that Florida was one of several states selected to receive federal grant money to improve bicycle safety. Nearly $10.5 million will be spent right here in Lee County.

As highlighted during U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx’s speech announcing the grant, 22 percent of recent roadway crashes in Lee County involve injuries or fatalities to pedestrians or bicyclists, which is more than twice the national average.

As detailed by Wink News, the money will be used to create 73 new miles of bike paths in the county. Below are a few of the projects that have already been identified:

  • Lee County Tour de Parks Route: The 35-mile segment will connect several Lee County parks, anchored by Lakes Regional Park in south Fort Myers. It will also connect JetBlue Park and the Hammond Stadium to the multi-use path system, which is designed to encourage alternative transportation to games and entertainment.
  • Segment 2, the University Loop: The 15-mile segment will address gaps in the bicycle/pedestrian facilities linking the Florida Gulf Coast University campus with the rest of the county.
  • Segment 3, Bi-County Connector: The 22.8-mile long bikeway segment will connect Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs, and Collier County. Additional improvements include sidewalks and new bus shelters along the route.
