Tragic I-75 Underride Accident Highlights Importance of Truck Safety

by Carmen Dellutri on October 14, 2013

Fort Myers personal injury attorneyTractor-trailers and large trucks are some of the most dangerous vehicles on Florida roadways. While they only make up three percent of vehicle traffic, they are involved in one out of nine fatal accidents.

Most recently, two people lost their lives on Interstate 75 when their vehicle struck a semi-truck and became lodged underneath. The crash occurred on the northbound lanes of I-75 near the Daniels Parkway exit.

Unfortunately, this type of crash — known as under underride accident — is one of the most deadly.  In 2011, 260 of the 2,241 passenger vehicle occupants killed in large truck crashes died when the fronts of their vehicles struck the rears of trucks.

As explained by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), when a vehicle strikes the back of a truck, the size differential between the two vehicles allows the smaller car to slide under the large truck. The roof of the vehicle often gets crushed because the structures designed to absorb the energy of a crash are bypassed. Airbags and safety belts also fail to protect occupants in these types of accidents.

Because vehicles are so vulnerable, most large trucks must be equipped with special steel bars, which are designed to prevent the front of a passenger vehicle from moving underneath during a crash. However, they are not effective at preventing all underride accidents.

Although the accident is still under investigation, common causes of underride crashes include improper underride guards, malfunctioning taillights, faulty brakes, following too closely, erratic lane changes, and sudden stops.
