Cape Coral Injury Lawyers: The Facts on School Injuries

by Carmen Dellutri on October 23, 2013

Florida accident attorneySchools are supposed to be safe places for children to learn and grow. Yet approximately 2.2 million children ages 14 and under suffer school-related injuries each year.

Below are some statistics from Safe Kids Worldwide about where injuries happen and who is most at risk:

  • Accidental injuries are nine times more prevalent than intentional injuries while at school
  • Children ages 10 to 14 are most at risk; they account for 46 percent of school-related injuries.
  • Boys are three times more likely to suffer a school-related injury than girls.
  • The most frequent causes of school-related injuries requiring hospitalization are falls (43 percent) and sports activities (34 percent).

Among younger school children, playground injuries are particularly common. In fact, an estimated 13,000 injuries occur annually on playgrounds during school hours. Falls are the most common culprit and can be particularly dangerous on playgrounds with hard surfaces. Improper supervision is linked to approximately 40 percent of playground injuries.

For older kids, sports pose the biggest risk. Contrary to what many might suspect, the majority of injuries (62 percent) occur during practice rather than game play. Common causes include falls, collisions, overexertion or being struck by an object.

For parents, these statistics can be alarming. To ensure the safety of your child while at school, it is important to become involved. That means asking questions about supervision, playground equipment inspection, sports policies and other safety concerns. Parents can also teach children how to use common sense and protect themselves from injury.
