Will You Honor National Teen Driver Safety Week?

by Carmen Dellutri on October 24, 2013

Port Charlotte accident attorneyOctober 20-26, 2013 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. The theme of this year’s campaign is It Takes Two: Shared Expectations for Teens and Parents for Driving.

The awareness week aims to reduce the number of serious and often fatal crashes involving teen drivers. Car accidents remain the number one killer of adolescents in the United States. Teen drivers (ages 16 to 19) are involved in fatal crashes at four times the rate of adult drivers.

As Naples attorneys, we know how important safe driving is for teens who are just starting out on the road. Unlike seasoned drivers, they often lack the experience, skills and confidence needed to make safe driving decisions and overcome challenging conditions.

A recent Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute study found that 75 percent of serious teen crashes were due to a critical teen driver error. The three most common mistakes, which accounted for nearly 50 percent of all serious crashes, included:

  • Driving too fast for road conditions
  • Driving while distracted
  • Failing to detect a road hazard

As highlighted by the theme of year’s National Teen Driver Safety Week, parents of teens can play a critical role in preventing crashes. Steps include providing supervised driving practice, reinforcing critical driving skills and setting ground rules and expectations for independent driving.
