The Deadly Connection Between Distraction and Intersection Accidents

port charlotte accident lawyerDistracted driving and red light running are some of the most dangerous behaviors on the roadway. Unfortunately, they often go hand in hand.

Statistics show that failing to stop for red lights is the number one cause of urban crashes in the United States. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), intersection collisions result in more than 8,000 fatalities every year.

Distracted driving is estimated to play a role in more than 20 percent of all traffic accidents. The NHTSA reports that approximately 5,474 people were killed in distracted driving crashes, while another 448,000 were killed in 2009 alone.

Together, the risks are compounded. Distracted driving results in 7,336,697 red light violations, according to a new study by the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR). Researchers also found that violations are lowest in areas with strict cellphone laws.

In light of the alarming findings, the organization has launched a campaign to raise driver awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, particularly in the vicinity of intersections. As Fort Myers injury lawyers, we encourage our readers to read the study and think twice before texting or talking behind the wheel.
