Planning a Labor Day Road Trip? Top Tips for a Safe Holiday

by Carmen Dellutri on August 31, 2011

Sarasota accident lawyerIf you are planning to hit the road this upcoming Labor Day weekend, you are not alone. Unfortunately, the increased traffic means more accidents along Florida’s roads and highways. In fact, seven of the 15 deadliest days on the road occur between Aug. 1 and Labor Day, according to the American Automobile Association.

While August has remained a dangerous month on the roads for drivers, statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that early September is close behind when it comes to fatalities.

Four of the deadliest days for drivers in August have already passed, but the remaining days include Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and 2.

To keep you and your family safe this holiday weekend, here are some simple tips:

  • Drive defensively: This concept is the hallmark of safe driving, whether you're on a summer excursion or just taking a short jaunt to the grocery store. Always expect the unexpected.
  • Celebrate responsibly: Drinking and driving don't mix. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, three in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point.
  • Avoid distractions: Distracted driving can quickly lead to a Florida accident. If you're traveling with kids, keep them occupied with age-appropriate toys and activities.
  • Take a break: Fatigued driving can also lead to accidents. Therefore, you should make frequent stops when traveling long distances. Also, if you don’t feel well or simply feel fatigued, let someone else do the driving.
  • Keep emotions in check: Traffic and construction delays can be maddening, especially during a holiday weekend. To avoid a case of road rage, take a deep breath and remember that getting upset won’t get you there any faster.
