Florida Motorcycle Accident Attorney: Bikes and Alcohol Don’t Mix

by Carmen Dellutri on September 30, 2011

Florida Motorcycle accident attorneyWith our warm weather and scenic roads, motorcycles are a great way to travel around Florida. Unfortunately, the number of Florida motorcycle accidents and injuries has more than doubled over the last ten years. In 2009, Florida motorcycle fatalities accounted for 15.7% of all traffic fatalities.

As Florida personal injury attorneys, we can certainly attest to the growing number of motorcycle accidents, particularly those that involve alcohol.

In Florida in 2008, impaired motorcyclists with a BAC of .08+ accounted for 33% of motorcycle fatalities, while impaired motorcyclists with a BAC of .01+ accounted for 41% of motorcycle fatalities.

These statistics prove that motorcycles and alcohol can be a deadly combination.

As further evidence, recent studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the states of Florida and Kentucky, and in Australia indicate the following:

  • Having any alcohol in one’s body increases the chance of crashing by five times.
  • Having a BAC greater than 0.05 percent increases the risk of crashing about 40-fold.
  • One-fourth of all fatal alcohol-related motorcycle accidents involve motorcyclists running off the road, overturning, or falling from the motorcycle rather than striking another object.

Given the significant impact of alcohol on motorcycle safety, we encourage all riders to think twice before hopping on their bike if they have been drinking.
