Florida Personal Injury Attorney: Dehumidifiers Subject to Important Safety Recall

by Carmen Dellutri on October 11, 2011

Fort Myers personal injury attorneyTo combat the high humidity than persists for much of the year, dehumidifiers are used by many of us in Southern Florida. However, a recent product safety recall suggests that some popular models sold at retailers like Home Depot may be exposing us to significant risks.

Therefore, under the guidance of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, we strongly urge all owners of home dehumidifiers to immediately check their units before a tragic accident occurs.

According to the CPSC, certain 30-pint dehumidifiers made by LG Electronics Tianjin Appliance Co. have a dangerous electrical flaw that poses fire and burn hazards. The faulty dehumidifiers have already caused nine significant home fires and more than one million dollars in property damage.

As described by Consumer Reports, the latest warning follows a previous recall of the LG-made dehumidifiers sold under the Goldstar and Comfort-Aire brand names issued in December 2009. The CPSC had warned back then that the power connectors to the dehumidifiers' compressors could short out and start a fire. Eleven incidents were reported, including four fires, in connection with that recall.

However, since that initial recall, the CPSC has received 16 additional reports of electrical arcing, smoke, or fire from owners with the faulty dehumidifiers. Even more alarming, only two percent of the 98,000 units owned by consumers have been returned for the free repair offered by LG under the original recall notice, prompting the CPSC to alert consumers about the continuing risk of injury and fire.

The recalled dehumidifiers were sold at various retailers nationwide for about $140 to $150 from January 2007 to June 2008. The models are white with a red shut-off button, controls for fan speed and humidity control, and feature a front-loading water-catching bucket. Finally, if your unit is subject to the recall, the CPSC strongly recommends owners to immediately stop using the unit and unplug the appliance from electrical sockets.
