Florida Person Injury Attorney: New Children’s Movie Sets Bad Example for Bicycle Safety

by Carmen Dellutri on October 14, 2011

Florida bicycle accident attorneyIts seems that the folks behind the new family movie Dolphin Tale haven’t read our blog posts about bicycle safety. If they had, they would not have shown the 11-year-old lead character, Sawyer, riding his bike without a helmet through the streets of Clearwater, Florida.

This is particularly troubling given that Florida recorded the most bicyclist fatalities in 2009. That year, 7,282 children 5 to 14 were killed or injured and treated in a hospital due to bicycle-related crashes. Across the county, about 13 percent of the bicyclists who died on U.S. roads were under age 16, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Child bicycle safety is pivotal to preventing fatal accidents.

As Florida personal injury attorneys, here's what we think Warner Bros. should have considered regarding bicycle safety when making their movie:

  • Bicycle helmets prevent 52 to 60 percent of bike-related head injury deaths (for all ages), as well as an estimated 68 to 85 percent of nonfatal head and scalp injuries, and 65 percent of upper and middle face injuries, even when misuse is considered.
  • Universal use of bicycle helmets by children ages 4 to 15 could prevent between 135 and 155 deaths, between 39,000 and 45,000 head injuries, and between 18,000 and 55,000 scalp and face injuries annually.
  • Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and severe brain injury by 88 percent.

If you take your children to see Dolphin Tale this weekend, you may want to remind about bicycle safety, including wearing a helmet every time they ride their bike, despite what they see on the big screen.

The Dellutri Law Group is focused on making bad situations better and putting lives back together. If your child or someone you love has been seriously injured in a Florida bicycle accident, you may be entitled to compensation.
