Report: Slower Speeds Can Still Cause a Serious Florida Pedestrian Injury

Florida car accident attorneyEven slower speeds are deadly when it comes to a Florida pedestrian car accident, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The results of the new study are concerning, particularly given the fact that four of the ten most dangerous cities in the nation for pedestrians are located in Florida (click here for more information).

One of the most significant findings of the report was that the fatality rate goes up substantially as speed increases beyond relatively low speeds. At low speeds, below about 15 miles per hour (mph), risks are low and increase relatively slowly with small increments in speed.  However, as speed increases above 15 mph, small changes in speed yield relatively large increases in risk.

“Speed in a typical urban environment is a serious issue. It’s a high risk environment but one we tend to dismiss,” said Peter Kissinger, president and chief executive of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The death rate more than doubles for pedestrians when speed increases from 25 to 35 mph, said Kissinger. “That’s a big number. That’s something we hope all drivers will think about.”

Older Pedestrians at Greater Risk

The study also estimated that the risk of death for a 70-year-old pedestrian struck at any given speed is roughly equal to the risk of death for a 30-year-old struck by the same vehicle traveling 10 mph faster. For example, the risk of death for 70-year-old struck at 25 mph is approximately equal to the risk of death for a 30-year-old struck at 35 mph.

What Can We Do?

To reduce the number of pedestrians seriously injured and killed in Florida motor vehicle crashes in residential streets and urban areas, the report calls for traffic calming techniques, such as speed bumps, lane narrowing, changes in roadway curvature, and increased enforcement and the reduction of speed limits.

“Speed limits aren’t very popular,” Kissinger said. “But speed is one of the most significant problems and one we are the least willing to address. Hopefully people will hear the message, heed the warning and slow down a little.”
