Are Minority Children at Greater Risk for Injuries in a Florida Car Accident?

by Carmen Dellutri on November 14, 2011

Sarasota car accident lawyerMinority children might be at greater risk for Florida car crash-related injuries because fewer wear seat belts, according to a new study. As Florida personal injury attorneys, this finding disturbs us because we know firsthand what can happen when children aren’t properly restrained during an accident.

The study looked at statistics on 37,375 children younger than 16 collected from the National Trauma Database from 2002 to 2006. Among those children, less than half  (45.7%) were properly restrained.

Specifically, the study authors looked at the race/ethnicity of the children, whether or not they wore a seat belt, and the severity of their injury as determined by the need for emergency surgery, length of hospital stay, and morbidity/mortality. The lowest use of seat belts was found among black, Hispanic, and Native American children.

As we have noted in previous blog posts, each year thousands of young children are killed or injured in Florida car accidents. Proper use of car safety seats is one of the best ways to keep children safe.

Below is a short summary of Florida’s child restraint laws:

  • All passengers under 18 must wear a seat belt
  • Children 3 and younger must be secured in a federally approved child-restraint seat.
  • Children 4 through 5 must be secured by either a federally approved child restraint seat or safety belt.
  • The driver is responsible for buckling up the child.

Of course, parents and caregivers should also buckle up. You will not only protect yourself in the case of a Florida car accident, but also set a good example for your children.
