Fort Myers Motorcycle Accident Highlights the Need for Safer Driving

by Carmen Dellutri on November 22, 2011

Sarasota personal injury attorneyA recent Florida motorcycle and car collision on US 41 in Fort Myers highlights the need for safer driving by both car drivers and motorcyclists alike. Unfortunately, this serious Florida motorcycle accident resulted in several injuries, even though he was wearing a helmet.

According to police, Janie Hughery's motorcycle crashed into a Toyota Camry in the 4800 block of Cleveland Avenue, south of Colonial Boulevard. Hughery was traveling north on Cleveland Avenue when the southbound Camry crossed the northbound lanes attempting to make a left turn.

In this case, it appears that the driver of the car failed to notice the motorcycle before she turned. As Florida personal injury attorneys, we know this happens far more often than it should.

Over half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Often, the motorist, not the motorcyclist, is at fault because drivers don't "recognize" a motorcycle (usually unintentionally).

To help keep everyone safe, below are a few important facts that car drivers should understand about motorcycles:

  • Because of its small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car's blind spots (door/roof pillars) or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car (bushes, fences, bridges, etc.). Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you're changing lanes or turning at intersections.
  • Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle's speed. When checking traffic to turn at an intersection or into (or out of) a driveway, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.
  • Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind. Understand that motorcyclists adjust lane position for a purpose, not to be reckless or show off or to allow you to share the lane with them.
