Residents Calling for Change After Fatal Florida Car Accident

Naples personal injury attorneyAs Florida personal injury attorneys, we know that some intersections are notorious for Florida car accidents. In many of these cases, the question is often asked—could the accident have been prevented?

After an accident claimed the life of one man and left a teenager in critical condition, residents are calling for action at a busy intersection in Lee County. The two-vehicle crash happened last week on Palm Beach Boulevard and South Olga Drive. According to police, 38-year-old Kevin Curtis was killed when he failed to yield in his Nissan Altima while driving across Palm Beach Boulevard to South Olga Drive.

According to neighbors, it wasn't the first and won't be the last. They say cars frequently pass through the intersection at high speeds, making crashes inevitable. People who use this road are calling for changes.

"It's very dangerous," said Riverdale resident Brian Wenzlick.

It’s so dangerous that instead of trying to cross Palm Beach Boulevard to get across the street to South Olga Drive, he takes a different route with his truck.

"You have to go back towards LaBelle to go back towards Fort Myers. There's traffic running 70 mph in a 45 mph zone," he said.

Wenzlick says he knows it could have been him, or his kids, involved in a wreck.

"It's a dangerous intersection and it's been dangerous that I know of for the past 10 years," Riverdale resident Chuck Chaney told WZVN.

Chaney says he wants a stop light put there as soon as possible. In fact, he's already called the county and state demanding action.

"Hopefully they get out here and assess the traffic volume before a school bus gets hit and we have kids lying all over the road. God forbid that would happen, but that's probably going to be next," he said.

According to WZVN, officials with the Florida Department of Transportation and Lee County said they would take a look at the intersection.  However, they noted that the intersection is not considered a "high accident intersection."
