Florida Personal Injury Attorney: Are Parasailing Accidents on the Rise?

Naples personal injury attorneyAs Florida personal injury attorneys, we are concerned about the increase in parasailing accidents, many of which have resulted in fatalities. Late last month, several cruise lines canceled Caribbean parasailing excursions, following an accident that killed a 60-year-old passenger in St. Thomas. The St. Thomas parasailing death is the third this year involving North American tourists.

The Most Recent Parasailing Accident

Celebrity Cruises passenger Bernice Kraftcheck was killed and her 34-year-old daughter Danielle Haase hospitalized after a fall while parasailing. The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the accident, which prompted Celebrity, sister company Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian to suspend all parasailing excursions in the Caribbean.

The Risks Associated with Parasailing

As we noted in a recent blog post, parasailing has inherent risks, given that participants soar hundreds of feet in the air while tethered to a boat. However, those risks are compounded by lax safety measures and lack of any real government oversight, particularly outside the U.S.

The U.S. Coast Guard licenses commercial parasail boat drivers and inspects boats over a certain size. However, there are no minimum requirements for parachutes, harnesses, training, or procedures.

Unfortunately, safety measures in Florida are not much better than those in the Caribbean. Proposed legislation to establish such standards as maximum wind speeds, insurance requirements, and minimum distance from shore has failed in Florida, home to an estimated 70 to 120 commercial operators.
