Collier County Sheriff Partnering with Racecar Driver to Combat Texting Behind the Wheel

Fort Myers personal injury attorneysThe Collier County Sheriff's Office is partnering with professional racecar driver Michael Cenzi for a series of public service announcements and public appearances to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. The campaign, "Stay Focused: Don't Text and Drive," is intended to further awareness, education, and legislation for a ban on texting in Florida, according to Naples News.

"It's time to stop talking, it's time to stop texting and it's time to start saving lives," Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said during a news conference.

Cenzi, of Golden Gate Estates, is in his 12th year as a racecar driver. Through his partnership with AAA and The Auto Club South Traffic Safety Foundation, the Palmetto Ridge High School graduate said he is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of texting behind the wheel, particularly when it comes to teens.

"It is very tempting to utilize these mobile apps instead of staying fully focused on the road ahead," Cenzi said.

As we have noted on this blog, teen drivers are more likely than other age groups to be involved in a fatal crash where distraction is reported. In 2009, 16 percent of teen drivers involved in a fatal crash were reported to have been distracted, according to the NHTSA.

"Hitting speeds of over 100 mph, I understand how important it is to stay fully focused anytime I'm behind the wheel," he said. "People die because they think they can multitask while driving. But driving requires your hands, eyes and mind working together in order for you and others to be safe on the road."

In addition to the public service announcements, Rambosk and Cenzi will be making a series of public appearances and attending speaking engagements promoting the campaign.
