Lee County Begins Holiday Campaign to Crack Down on Drunk Driving

by Carmen Dellutri on December 27, 2011

Florida accident attorneyAs Florida personal injury attorneys, we know that too much holiday “cheer” can often lead to a drunk driving accident. In fact, December signals the beginning of the deadliest season for motor vehicle crashes.

To combat the rising number of fatal car accidents, local law enforcement agencies, nonprofits, and health-care providers have dedicated December to raising safe-driving awareness.

At a recent press conference at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, county Commissioner John Manning announced the official start of 4D Prevention Month – designed to prevent drunk, drugged drowsy and distracted driving. 3D Prevention Month is a nationwide event, but Southwest Florida has added distracted driving as its 4th D.

“We’ve all worked fatal accidents over the holiday season,” Fort Myers Police Chief Doug Baker said. “Make this holiday season a safe holiday season.”

Statistics suggest that this holiday season might be particularly dangerous. Traffic fatalities in Lee County have increased by almost 17 percent since this time last year, according to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. There have been 65 deaths so far this year, compared with 54 at the beginning of December 2010.

In addition, the Lee Memorial Trauma Center saw 67 fatalities so far this year compared with 65 for all of 2010. That increase is alarming because the dangerous holiday season is not yet in full swing, said Syndi Bultman, injury prevention manager for Lee Memorial Health System.

Of all traffic fatalities recorded 2009 and 2010, 50 percent of the drivers had a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit and 30 percent tested positive for marijuana or cocaine, Bultman said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Fort Myers Police Department will have increased patrols and regular DUI checkpoints this holiday season in an attempt to keep drivers safe.
