Naples Accident Highlights Risks of Scooters

Sarasota accident attorneyGiven the warm weather, scooters are a popular way to get around in Florida. They are also environmentally friendly and get great gas mileage. However, scooters have one significant drawback—they can lead to serious injuries in the event of an accident.

Just last month, a Naples resident driving a scooter was seriously injured in a crash. According to News-Press.com, the driver of the scooter unexpectedly veered into the outside lane, striking the trailer of another vehicle. He was then knocked off of his scooter and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital due to the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Like motorcycles, scooters offer very little protection for riders when an accident occurs. They are often difficult to be seen and heard by other drivers. As a result, scooters riders should be cautious and defensive.

Below are several recommendations from the Consumer Product Safety Commission for avoiding a serious scooter accident:

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Avoid gravel and uneven pavement, which can cause falls.
  • Don't ride scooters in traffic.
  • Don't ride scooters at night - riders can't see where they're going or be seen by others.
  • Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Owners of scooters should check with local authorities for local laws regarding scooters.
