Can Distraction Also Lead to Florida Boating Accidents?

Boat accident attorney floridaAs we have discussed on this blog, driver distraction is often to blame for Florida car accidents. However, distraction can be a recipe for disaster on Florida’s waterways as well.

Just last week, two men were taken to the hospital after their boat crashed into a dock and seawall in Indian Rocks Beach, according to Pinellas County Marine Unit deputies.

As detailed by ABC Action News, Richard Bosman of Largo, was driving his 2011 Pursuit with his friend, Samuel Roback, also of Largo, when Bosman reached to grab a sip of coffee. Because Bosman was distracted, he ran his boat into the dock of 526 20th Avenue North, according to deputies.

Although Bosman told authorities he was only traveling at 25 miles per hour when the accident took place, it still catapulted Bosman into the water causing him to push the throttle fully open as he was ejected.

Roback was knocked back into the boat as the vessel started to circle out of control. Although he tried to hit the kill switch of the boat, it struck another dock before finally stopping.

Bosman suffered a shoulder and knee injury, while Roback was helped from the boat possibly suffering from lower leg and torso injuries. Both were taken to Morton Plant Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As highlighted by this story, distraction increases the risk of a Florida accident, no matter what type of vehicle you may be driving. For tips on how to avoid distraction when driving a car, truck, motorcycle, or boat, check out our previous post here.
