Could Technology Help Prevent Cape Coral Drowsy Driving Accidents?

Cape Coral car accident attorneyAs Cape Coral car accident attorneys, we have seen firsthand the serious consequences of drowsy driving. That’s why we are interested in a new technology that claims to alert drivers when they drift out of their lane and help prevent a car accident.

As detailed in a recent New York Times article, car manufacturers are increasingly equipping their vehicles with technology designed to warn drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel. Given that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year, many hope these systems could save lives.

There are many system already out on the road. Toyota, Mercedes, and Lexus all offer some type of “lane assist” feature. Most recently, Ford announced a new technology package that relies on a camera mounted to the rear-view mirror.

When the system is activated and the vehicle is traveling more than 40 miles per hour, it uses the road’s lane markings to detect veering near one edge of the lane or the other. If the turn signal is off, the system will assume that the drift is unintentional and the steering wheel will vibrate as a warning. If the driver fails to respond, the software is then supposed to engage the power steering and turn the car back toward the center of the lane.

While this technology sounds extremely promising, it is not without its limitations. According to the NYT, it has difficulty detecting lane markings when the sun is at a low angle during heavy rainfall, and on curves.

Because it is far from perfect, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet recommended the new technology. Ronald Medford, deputy administrator of the agency, says, “We believe additional evaluation and research about lane-keeping systems is needed before we can decide whether we should recommend it to the public.”

In the meantime, we encourage all drivers to take steps to prevent Florida drowsy driving accidents. For specific tips, check out our previous blog post here.
