Port Charlotte Accident Attorney: Is Your Child at Risk for a Rollaway Accident?

by Carmen Dellutri on March 15, 2012

Cape Coral car accident attorneyAs Port Charlotte accident attorneys, we know that leaving a child alone for just a minute can sometimes lead to a serious accident. This is especially true for cars and trucks, which can be shifted into gear by a child and roll away.

When the vehicle is set in motion, children may become frightened and suffer serious injuries attempting to jump out of the moving vehicle. Children can also be hurt inside the vehicle, especially if they are not buckled up while the vehicle is moving. In other cases, the vehicle could crash into a person or other vehicle.

While newer vehicles are equipped with safety technology intended to prevent vehicles from accidentally being put into gear, this is not the case with older vehicles. Only automatic vehicles manufactured for sale after September 1, 2010, must have Brake Transmission Safety Interlock (BTSI).

To keep your kids safe, below are several tips provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • Teach children not to play in or around cars.
  • Supervise children carefully when in and around vehicles.
  • Keep vehicle locked when unattended.
  • Never leave keys in the car.
  • Engage your emergency brake every time you park.
  • Verify whether or not your vehicle has BTSI. Read the owner's manual or check HERE to find BTSI-equipped vehicles.
