Boat accident attorney floridaAs prime boating season approaches in Fort Myers and surrounding areas, we want to make sure that our readers are prepared. As waterways become more crowded, the risk for Florida boating accidents increases dramatically. Therefore, we encourage everyone to take a quick “refresher” on the most important boating safety tips.

To help you get started, we have listed the Coast Guard’s Ten Commandments of Boater Safety below.

1. First and foremost is wearing a proper fitting life jacket, have one for everyone on board.

2. Make sure all the required safety equipment is on board. Obtain a Copy of Florida’s Recreational Boating Requirements from your friendly boating dealer or the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

3. Going off shore? Leave a “float plan” with a responsible party. This gives a description of your boat, tells where you’re leaving from and how many are on board, where you’re going and when you’re expecting to return, plus the party to notify in emergency.

4. Drinking alcohol is a big no-no for the operator. Boating under the influence could mean stiff fines or worse.

5. No bow riding, it’s deadly and illegal. It is an accident waiting to happen.

6. Beware of serious heat and sun problems, use protective lotions, a hat, shade, sunglasses, etc.

7. Avoid dehydration, drink lots of water, this for everyone aboard.

8. Obey all Aids to Navigation, speed zones, manatee zones etc.

9. Always stay alert and observe the activity occurring all around your boat

10. And finally, be a courteous boater at all times.
