Fort Myers Injury Attorneys: Is Spring Training Making Our Roads Less Safe?

by Carmen Dellutri on April 13, 2012

Port Charlotte injury lawyerEvery spring, Major League Baseball players descend on Fort Myers and other Southern Florida communities. While we love to be a part of the annual tradition, as Fort Myers injury attorneys, we are concerned about the number of alcohol-related accidents that seem to follow.

Last month, two MLB players were arrested for driving under the influence after being involved in car accidents. Tampa Bay Rays minor league pitcher Matthew Brian Bush was arrested after he struck a motorcyclist and left the scene. Bush was driving south on U.S. 41 in Port Charlotte when he struck the motorcycle driven by 72-year-old Anthony Tufano, according to Marco News. He faces multiple DUI- related charges and leaving the scene of an injury accident. Meanwhile, Tufano suffered broken bones throughout his body, brain hemorrhaging, and lung damage.

In a similar incident, Boston Red Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks was arrested, charged with driving under the influence and hit and run. Police were called after Jenks hit two vehicles in the parking lot of Babe's nightclub on Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers. After failing a field sobriety exercise, a deputy asked Jenks why he could not pass the test.

"I'm messed up," Jenks said, according to reports. He told deputies he had taken too many muscle relaxers.

Unfortunately, these are only the most recent DUI accidents involving professional baseball players. In March 2006, Minnesota Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano was arrested on a DUI charge in Cape Coral and found guilty. Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested in February 2011 in Fort Pierce on a DUI charge. He reportedly drank from a bottle of liquor in front of a deputy and refused to cooperate. He later pleaded no contest to DUI.
